Governor Kitzhaber to Lead Business Mission to Asia to Promote Oregon Business‏

August 16, 2012

With Oregon’s economy increasingly dependent on global sales of its products, Governor Kitzhaber will lead a business mission to Asia in October to promote Oregon products and innovation, and attract new investment to the state.
Governor Kitzhaber will be joined by public and private sector leaders on the 10-day mission, with meetings and events in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Kyoto and Tokyo..

Oregon’s exports to Asia remain a critical component of the state’s economy with international trade growing by 19 percent in 2011 on nearly $18 billion in foreign sales. China is currently Oregon’s second largest trading partner with $1.2 billion in exports from Oregon during the first six months of 2012. Meanwhile, Japan remains the most important export market for the state’s agricultural products.

“Selling Oregon’s high quality products in international markets is a critical to creating good paying jobs in Oregon and helping grow our businesses small and large,” said Governor Kitzhaber. “In the highly competitive global economy, Oregon needs to continue to make its presence known and work to improve its business relationships in every corner of the world.”

International trade impacts every region of the state with nearly 5,000 Oregon companies exporting their goods and services abroad – from large companies like Intel and Nike to blueberry farmers in the Willamette Valley and recycling equipment manufacturers in Eugene. Governor Kitzhaber plans to promote foreign direct investment in the state as well as Oregon as a tourism destination.

Governor Kitzhaber last visited Asia on a business and trade mission in September of 2011, when he held meetings in South Korea, China and Japan.
